Recently, Socorro Ramos-Aviles and I were invited to attend a day long convocation of the Martin Luther King Jr. Dialogue Table in Puerto Rico. At the event, Dr. Agustina Luvis Núñez, Associate Professor and Director of the D.Min. Program at the Seminario Evangélico de Puerto Rico, shared this prophetic statement calling attention to the desire of her superiors to keep the former governor of Puerto Rico in office, just because he said he was sorry for his actions and comments that eventually led to his resignation. Her goal was to encourage those present to not just accept things as they come, and for faith leaders to act as prophets in times of transition. – Denise Collazo, Senior Advisor for External Affairs, Faith in Action

Dearest Reverend,
My name is Agustina Luvis Núñez. I respectfully write this letter. I have been a Pentecostal from the time I was in my mother’s womb and for the last 60 years. I am an ordained minister of the Iglesia Defensores de la fe (Defenders of the Faith Church) and an 
Associate Professor of Theology at the Evangelical Seminary of PR for the past 15 years. My doctoral thesis was on the subject of Pentecostal ecclesiology and I teach that subject, among others, in Seminary.
The introduction above was to let you know that I grew up in the Pentecostal church, I was born in it, it breastfed me, baptized me, married me and ordered me into the holy ministry. I love her with all my heart. It was with great pain that I listened to your comments in relation to the governor’s case. Why was it painful?
Because the denomination that you lead, by the grace of God, is under the umbrella of Pentecostalism, one of the classic Pentecostal churches, which with other 4, trace their origins to Azusa, Los Angeles, California. It hurt me, because the original Pentecostals never allowed political ideologies to impede the affirmation and testimony of their faith.
Pastor, Pentecostal theology teaches, just as it was willed to us by the Protestant theology, that the grace of Jesus Christ is not a cheap grace. Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance and restitution, as the theologian Bonhoeffer taught us. Every human being can shelter under the grace of God and has all the opportunities to receive forgiveness.
What is unacceptable is to turn the house of God into a den of thieves. Repentance entails humiliation, taking responsibility, restitution and even beyond the damage caused. Forgiveness produces fruit worthy of repentance. Crying and asking for forgiveness are not synonyms for repentance. The insistence of the governor and his followers to continue in power demonstrates their lack of repentance and the gross manipulation of the Christian faith to continue deceiving the country. We receive a pedophile in the church, we forgive him, we love him, but we do not make him serve in our children’s ministry or teach bible school to our children. That is also part of repentance, recognizing that you have to grow and evaluate the consequences of your actions.
The children of light must be more cunning than the children of darkness.
Don’t just listen to what other say, do not let our people perish for lack of knowledge, read the document or the documents in their entirety. This document is not a mistake, it is not a human error. It’s all a corruption scheme, disgusting mockery and aberrations … to whom? Towards everyone. Towards you, your own followers, honest followers, Christians, who voted for him, towards people with illnesses, towards his relatives who died during the hurricane, towards his brothers and sisters who are obese, towards his mother, his daughter, his wife, his sister. Towards his own partners and party members. And even his own wife.
This is a whole structure of institutional sin that requires the cleaning of the house and not just a forgiveness for the governor. God cannot be mocked, and the disciples of Christ have to bear witness to our faith and demonstrate in this very tragic hour, where our loyalties really lie.
When studying the history of Pentecostalism in Latin America, there is a sad event recorded in all the books around the world, of which we have always had to repent. A Pentecostal church in Chile made a inauguration service for the administration of the dictator Augusto Pinochet, when all the churches refused to do so because of the brutality of the Pinochet regime. I have traveled a bit and in London, USA, Australia, Cuba, Jamaica and Latin America, I have always been asked how is it that the Pentecostal church had done such a thing.
Today, you and a church of your Council made history repeat itself. Meditate and reflect. I am always at the service of the Pentecostal churches and at your service, to serve. It is my church. God enlighten and accompany us so that, as a pastoral body, we can support this people, feeding, comforting, denouncing institutional sins and sowing a seed of hope, just as the Master did.

Nine days after announcing his resignation on July 24, the governor passed into law 66 bills, silently made numerous appointments, authorized 80 million dollars in 200 contracts and granted 15 pardons.

Mi nombre es Agustina Luvis Núñez y con todo el respeto que Ud. se merece, decidí escribirle esta nota. Soy pentecostal desde el vientre de mi madre y por 60 años. Soy ministra ordenada de la Iglesia Defensores de la fe y Catedrática Asociada por 15 años de Teología en el Seminario Evangélico de PR. Mi tesis doctoral fue sobre el tema de eclesiología pentecostal y enseño ese tema, entre otros, en el Seminario.
Toda esta introducción para dejarle saber que la iglesia pentecostal me vio nacer, me amamantó, me bautizó, me casó y me ordenó al santo ministerio. La amo con todo mi corazón. Fue con mucho dolor que escuché sus expresiones con relación al caso del gobernador. Porqué me dolió?
Porque la denominación que ud. dirige, por gracia de Dios, es lo que se llama bajo la sombrilla del Pentecostalismo, una de las iglesias pentecostales clásicas, que con otras 4, trazan sus orígenes a Azuza, Los Ángeles, California. Me dolió, porque los pentecostales originarios nunca permitieron que las ideologías políticas impidieran la afirmación y el testimonio de su fe.
Pastor, la teología pentecostal enseña, al igual que nos legó la teología Protestante, que la gracia de Jesucristo no es una gracia barata. La gracia barata es la predicación del perdón sin requerir arrepentimiento y restitución, como nos enseñara el teólogo Bonhoeffer. Todo ser humano puede cobijarse bajo la gracia de Dios y tiene todas las oportunidades para recibir el perdón.
Lo que es inaceptable es convertir la casa de Dios en cueva de ladrones. El arrepentimiento conlleva humillación, toma de responsabilidad, restitución y aún más allá del daño causado. El perdón produce frutos dignos de arrepentimiento. Llorar y pedir perdón no son sinónimos de arrepentimiento. La insistencia del gobernador y sus seguidores de continuar en el poder demuestra su falta de arrepentimiento y la burda manipulación de la fe cristiana para continuar engañando al país. A un pedófilo o pederasta lo recibimos en la iglesia, lo perdonamos, lo amamos, pero mañana no le entregamos nuestros niños y niñas para que los atienda en la escuela bíblica. Eso también es parte del arrepentimiento, reconocer que se tiene que crecer y evaluar las consecuencias de sus actos.
Los hijos de luz tienen que ser mas astutos que los hijos de las tinieblas.
No toque de oído, no permita que nuestro pueblo perezca por falta de conocimiento, lea el documento ó los documentos en su totalidad. Este documento no es una equivocación, no es un error humano. Es todo un esquema de corrupción, burla asquerosa, y aberraciones… hacia quienes? Hacia todos y todas. Hacia ustedes, sus propios seguidores y seguidoras decentes, cristianos, que votaron por él, hacia las personas con enfermedades, hacia sus familiares que murieron durante el huracán, hacia sus hermanos y hermanas que son obesos, hacia su madre, su hija, su esposa, su hermana. Hacia sus propias compañeras y compañeros de partido. Y hasta a su propia esposa.
Esto es toda una estructura de pecado institucional que requiere la limpieza de la casa y no únicamente un perdón para el gobernador. Dios no puede ser burlado y los discípulos y discípulas de Cristo tenemos que dar testimonio de nuestra fe y demostrar en esta hora tan trágica, donde realmente están nuestras lealtades. Cuando se estudia la historia del Pentecostalismo en América Latina, hay un suceso que está en todos los libros alrededor del mundo y una página triste, de la que siempre nos hemos tenido que arrepentir. Una iglesia pentecostal de Chile, le hizo un culto de iniciación al gobierno del dictador Augusto Pinochet, cuando todas las iglesias rehusaron hacerlo por la brutalidad del régimen de Pinochet . He viajado un poco y en Londres, EU, Australia, Cuba, Jamaica, América Latina siempre me han preguntado que cómo es posible que la iglesia pentecostal haya hecho semejante cosa.
Hoy, Ud. y una iglesia de su Concilio repiten la historia. Medite y reflexione. Estoy siempre a la orden de las iglesias pentecostales y a su orden, para servir. Es mi iglesia. Dios le ilumine y nos acompañe para que como cuerpo pastoral, acompañemos a este pueblo, apacentando, consolando, denunciando los pecados institucionales y sembrando una semilla de esperanza, tal como hizo el Maestro,
