As for the whole idea of churches acting as sanctuaries; “Well that’s been going on since the beginning of time, because churches have always been seen as sort of an untouchable institution.” she explained.
The DMV Sanctuary Congregation Network however, has only been around for a year and a half.
They may be viewed as untouchable, however, undocumented immigrants do not have legal sanctuary at churches. Those who help “harbor” them, could face consequences.
“They’re already here and they need caring. They need to be made sure that their rights as human beings are observed. We have legal requirements that we listen to people as they seek asylum, it’s international law, it’s federal law passed by congress years ago and it’s just humane law, as far as I’m concerned.” Foltz said.
Neither congregation we spoke with is actually prepared to physically house an immigrant or immigrant family, but Wellspring UCC’s sister congregation in Reston is.
