Oakland schools superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell said on Wednesday that she still hopes to avoid a strike by the district’s 3,000 teachers even though 95 percent of them have voted to authorize a strike.
Speaking at a packed news conference at school district headquarters, Johnson-Trammell said, “I’m an internal optimist” when she was asked if the district and the Oakland Education Association, which represents teachers and other employees, are making any progress in their contract talks, which have been going on for more than a year and a half.
