The pleas of crying migrant children became a rallying cry in Springfield on Wednesday as protesters assembled outside the offices of two Missouri Republicans to call for the federal government to stop separating children from parents who immigrate illegally.

An estimated 300 people assembled on East Sunshine Street outside the office of Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Missouri, who is co-sponsoring legislation meant to prevent families from being separated after they cross the border illegally or seek asylum.

President Donald Trump’s administration in April adopted a zero-tolerance approach to enforcing immigration laws and prosecuting violators. As a result, there have been more family separations along the U.S.-Mexico border over the previous two months than in years past.
