SAN DIEGO — Rev. Alvin Herring, San Diego-based faith leader and executive director of Faith in Action has issued this statement in response to the shooting today at Congregation Chabad just outside San Diego. Faith in Action is an international network of 39 federations and local groups in 21 states and three countries. Rev. Herring shared the following sentiments on today’s tragedy.
“We must denounce the utter cruel and senseless violence that hate has visited upon our community. We at Faith in Action stand in solidarity with our Jewish brothers and sisters and especially those whose lives have been damaged by this act of hate. In every instance of violence we should be moved to push for the kind of comprehensive gun reform that would make us all safer. It is in these moments we must double down on our efforts to defeat hate and attempts to tear us apart and also do the kind of work needed to knit us together as a community.” – Rev. Alvin Herring, executive director, Faith in Action
Prior to assuming this leadership role, Rev. Herring worked as the director for racial equity and community engagement for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the fifth largest foundation in the world. While serving in this role, he advanced racial justice by ensuring groups doing racial justice work had resources to propel their campaigns and initiatives.
It is also because of his leadership, and his partnership with others, that Faith in Action’s clergy leaders stepped out of congregations and stepped onto the streets of Ferguson, Missouri in the aftermath of the fatal police shooting of Mike Brown. He continues to challenge the international network to live up to its deepest moral values and to disrupt the status quo.
The 21st century movement for racial and social justice is fortunate to list him among the leaders reshaping how this nation utilizes faith to organize communities to achieve progress and change.
