Black Belt News Network – A rally by Faith in Action Alabama to protest cuts to what was called a raw sewage crisis in Lowndes County is planned for Saturday in Hayneville.
A press release from Faith in Action Alabama said that federal funding cuts to address sewage needs may pose a “significant” public health risk for residents.
“This is a public health emergency that cannot be ignored,” said Bishop Francine Brookins, vice-chairman of the Pan-Methodist Commission. “For years, frontline residents—led by advocates like Catherine Coleman Flowers—have sounded the alarm about this preventable crisis. Yet, despite the urgent need, federal funding for vital mitigation has been withdrawn, leaving families exposed to dangerous pathogens and environmental hazards.”
