SOUTH BEND — Even after a seven-month investigation, Special Prosecutor Ric Hertel could not put to rest some lingering questions about the shooting of Eric Logan by South Bend police officer Ryan O’Neill.

Hertel said Friday his office and Indiana State Police detectives spent “countless hours” investigating, and re-investigating, the shooting. He also said he enlisted an independent forensic expert, with experience reconstructing police shootings, to evaluate the case.

Still, much of the information Hertel provided about the circumstances of Logan’s death left Logan’s family, community activists and even some South Bend officials frustrated. And he acknowledged that some issues in the case were not resolved, though he pointed out that they didn’t change his bottom-line conclusion that O’Neill was “justified” in shooting Logan on June 16, 2019.
