To accommodate the number of people at the shelters, the City of Reno, along with several local churches and Acting Community Together in Organizing Northern Nevada (ACTIONN), have collaborated to provide a temporary solution to the growing numbers of homelessness as winter weather has moved into the region. The shelter will have heat, electricity and beds for at least 50 people.
The overflow shelter, in the parking lot at 4th and Record streets, is slated to be open until March 2019. It is first-come-first-serve. Men and women are welcome. It is staffed by volunteers from local faith-based organizations.
Volunteers of America‘s (VOA) Regional Director Patrick Cashell says when all the shelters are full, including the tent, they let people stay inside a warm room inside the VOA building. They want to make it clear they will not turn anyone away.
