Inspired by the Statue of Liberty in New York, the San Diego Organizing Project (SDOP) is completing the construction of a monument visible from many miles around the parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, belonging to the diocese of San Diego, on the border between Mexico and the United States.
With this representation of Mary, the SDOP, sponsored by Bishop McElroy, will welcome “a new generation of immigrants and refugees who yearn for freedom and prosperity.” It is a matter, says the explanatory statement, of “bringing this beacon of hope to our border community.”
