Congress has taken a two-week break to resume the debate on the federal budget and, taking advantage of this hiatus, more than 800 religious leaders urged legislators not to increase funds for the expansion of detention centers and deportations.
In a letter delivered in Congress, activists and religious leaders stressed the urgency of helping migrants, thousands of whom were part of a caravan that is now stranded in Mexico waiting for the Department of Homeland Security to allow them to enter to the country and request asylum.
In the letter addressed to the main Democratic and Republican leaders of both houses of Congress , activists grouped under the “Faith in Action” network, called for curbing rhetoric and policies that not only “demonize and dehumanize” migrants but also incite the violence.
