It took less than three weeks for a bill setting a moratorium on evictions and foreclosures to be filed and passed by the Massachusetts House of Representatives. The bill now goes to the Senate.

On April 2, the House passed legislation based on HD.4935, “An Act providing for a moratorium on evictions and foreclosures during the COVID-19 emergency,” filed by Cambridge-Somerville Rep. Mike Connolly and Housing Committee Co-Chair Kevin Honan on March 13. That bill was co-sponsored by over 70 legislators.

“I’m pleased the House of Representatives has taken strong action to advance comprehensive protections for renters, homeowners, and local businesses against eviction or foreclosure for the duration of the COVID-19 emergency and beyond,” said Connolly. “This is the right thing to do for our constituents who are now facing financial hardship and also for the health and well-being of our entire community, as no one should be put out on the street in the middle of a public health disaster. I’m grateful for the support of Speaker DeLeo, Chairs Honan and Michlewitz, and my Cambridge and Somerville colleagues in passing this bill.”
