SOUTH BEND — While Mayor James Mueller has pledged that the city is close to finishing a strengthened new matrix to discipline police officers for misconduct, more than 50 people of various faiths gathered Saturday to pray that he and other city leaders have the “wisdom and courage” to follow through on it. And to do it soon.
The gathering, organized by the group Faith in Indiana, wants to see the fine-tuned matrix in place within 60 days. But the Rev. J.B. Williams, pastor of Abundant Faith Family Ministries, said he’d rather not wait that long.
“We need something now,” he told The Tribune as the group assembled at First United Methodist Church. It follows Friday’s announcement by Special Prosecutor Ric Hertel, of Ripley County, who found that Sgt. Ryan O’Neill, who has since left the force, was justified in shooting Eric Logan, 54, last June in the parking lot of the downtown Central High Apartments.
