Faith in Action calls on the Trump Administration to heed religious freedom principles embedded in the Constitution and reverse course on today’s religious liberty commission executive order.

WASHINGTON – Leaders with Faith in Action, a global multi-faith and multi-racial network, reject the premise of today’s executive order establishing a religious liberty commission. People of faith from across the country are vehemently opposed to the dangerous precedent set by the undermining of our fundamental First Amendment rights.

In a statement, Bishop Dwayne Royster, executive director of Faith in Action, sounded the alarm on the lack of grounds and constitutional threat for creating a religious liberty commission:

“This order accelerates the collapse of our democracy under an administration that coddles white supremacists, demonizes immigrants and dares to preach about faith while betraying its very essence. They have no moral authority and certainly no divine mandate to define what faith means. Religious freedom is not theirs to wield as a weapon of fear or domination. It is a sacred covenant extended to all of God’s children regardless of race, creed or country of origin. We must not stand idly by while the Gospel of love is hijacked and perverted into a tool of hate and division. ”

The Rev. Deth Im, director of faith leadership strategies at Faith in Action, shared his concerns over the implications on our fundamental religious freedoms in the following statement:

“Freedom of religion is a right we all have to choose, without fear, coercion, or government favoritism. The First Amendment guarantees that the government will not establish or favor any religion. I don’t fear anti-Christian bias. Rather, I fear the unmitigated proliferation of Christian dominance over under-represented faith traditions.

As people of faith, we reject this theocratic power grab masquerading as liberty and freedom. Let’s not wait for worse to come and stop this evil before our siblings from other faith traditions lose their ability to practice as they choose.”
