Proposed budget prioritizes the ultra-wealthy over everyday Americans, immigrants and others vulnerable to morally bankrupt policies
WASHINGTON – Faith leaders and advocates from Faith in Action are condemning the Trump administration’s newly released discretionary budget, calling it a profound moral failure that deepens inequality and turns its back on the nation’s most vulnerable communities. The proposal extends tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy, increases spending on military and border enforcement at the expense of critical investments in education, housing, health care and other safety net programs.
Bishop Dwayne Royster, executive director of Faith in Action, said: “This budget is not just misguided policy, it is a betrayal of our shared responsibility to care for one another. Many line items directly oppose justice, compassion and the sacred dignity of all God’s children. It chooses weapons over workers, walls over welcoming and wealth over the well-being of our communities. As people of faith, we are called to build a society where everyone can thrive. All people of moral courage should reject this immoral vision and call on their elected officials to do the same.”
The Rev. Dr. Cassandra Gould, political director of Faith in Action, said: “The administration is reshaping government to serve the interests of the wealthy and powerful at the expense of working families and marginalized communities. Every cent cut from housing, healthcare, education and other vital programs is another moral failing of their agenda. It is a deliberate abandonment of the common good, and, as people of faith, we see it as a betrayal of what it means to love our neighbors and care for the vulnerable.”
