Rutland Herald – As faith leaders representing Bah’ai, Buddhist, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Protestant, Quaker and Unitarian Universalist traditions from across Vermont, we are deeply concerned that our fundamental freedoms are being attacked by members of our federal government guided by the influence of white Christian nationalists.

Out of our shared values of love, respect, social justice, and collective action for the common good, we denounce efforts to erase the separation between church and state, and establish a government that promotes and enforces white supremacist, Christian nationalist, nativist, patriarchal and heteronormative standards for public and private life. Using intimidation and force, the aim is to restrict liberty and justice so it is available to only some and not for all of us. The unlawful arrest and detention of longtime Vermont resident, Mohsen Mahdawi, is a prime example.
