As most of Indiana forges ahead with reopening the economy amid COVID-19, some residents fear that the communities most ravaged, economically and physically, by the novel disease will be left behind.
“(The governor) says everyday that we’re all in this together,” Ana Gonzales, a Fort Wayne resident and the daughter of immigrants, said at a virtual town hall that more than 300 listeners attended Thursday. “But for my family and thousands of other mixed-status households in the state, we need that to be more than just a slogan.”
Gonzalez, other marginalized community members and faith leaders are calling on Gov. Eric Holcomb to ensure that people in Indiana communities and neighborhoods hit the hardest by the coronavirus have access to no-cost testing and health insurance, among other things.
