There are large gaps in the social services system in Eureka, making getting people off the streets a major challenge, say those who work with the homeless.
“The system’s failing right now,” said Eureka Police Department Sgt. Leonard LaFrance, who heads a unit of four officers and one staff member who do daily outreach with the local homeless community.
Locals concerned about homelessness — from public officials to those with experience dealing with homelessness — gathered at the Christ Episcopal Church in Eureka on Saturday at local nonprofit organization True North Organizing Network’s town hall on transitional housing.
