A new city ordinance was proposed in Brockton to ensure that immigrants, regardless of their legal status, can report crimes to local police without being turned over to federal authorities for potential deportation.
After a previously floated ordinance called the “Trust Act” failed to gain approval, the “Brockton United” ordinance was recently filed by newly installed City Council President Moises Rodrigues, who is also the head of the Cape Verdean Association of Brockton. The City Council discussed the “Trust Act” in 2016, but it ultimately fizzled, after some councilors expressed concerns that President Trump would deny the city federal funding over so-called “sanctuary city” status and after Brockton Police Chief John Crowley made comments about how it could be unduly restrictive, in terms of cooperation with the federal government.
