Jessica Bookland of Palm Desert has grown increasingly upset as she’s heard about the Trump Administration policy that has caused immigrant children to be separated from their parents.
Nearly 2,000 kids were separated from adults charged with entering the country illegally between April 19 and May 31, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, BuzzFeed reported. Now, some 1,500 kids are being housed in a former Walmart in Brownsville, Texas, according to the New York Times. On Thursday, the federal government announced it will also erect temporary tent housing along the Texas border for up to 360 more kids.
“I just can’t imagine the pain that the children and parents are going through,” Bookland said, as she bounced her daughter Aella, who’s a year and a half old, in her arms. Each wore half of a jagged, red heart pinned to her shirt.
Bookland was one of about 70 Coachella Valley residents who gathered in Cathedral City on Friday morning to speak out against the Trump Administration’s zero-tolerance policy. Across the country, thousands of people took to the streets this week to decry the policy, which says anyone caught crossing illegally into the country will be prosecuted. It also applies to people exercising their right to seek asylum.
