Nearly 300 people began assembling at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in San Ysidro Friday evening.

Members of activists groups and churches from across California are preparing for a weekend of protests and demonstrations following policies that separated migrant families.

“I think that a line was crossed,” said Joseph McKellar with PICO California.

The group held a candlelight service Friday. Many brought sleeping bags to sleep and camp out on site ahead of the weekend’s events.

The numbers are expected to grow to at least 1,000 people on Saturday, according to an organizer. The demonstrations will take place at Friendship Park Saturday morning, and then at the Otay detention center in the afternoon and evening.
