On the eve of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, her organization, Faith in Action Alabama, held a listening event at First Presbyterian Church to bring the groups together. The timing was significant, said Daniel Schwartz, director of Faith in Action Alabama. He said King didn’t avoid tension, and that Birmingham shouldn’t either.

“Tension is important,” Schwartz said. “It’s not bad. We need to learn to lean into that tension with respect.”
