Advocates are suing Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner and supervisors of elections in 32 counties for not providing bilingual voting materials and assistance to Spanish-speaking Puerto Ricans, who are U.S. citizens. The lawsuit alleges that by not providing this support, Florida officials are violating the Voting Rights Act. Part of that law prohibits voting discrimination against citizens who have at least a sixth-grade education based on their inability to understand English. The suit was filed by voting rights groups Faith in Florida, Hispanic Federation, Mi Familia Vota Education Fund, UnidosUS, Vamos 4PR and Marta Rivera, a voter.
