BROCKTON — The group of mostly young people of color sat on the concrete benches on City Hall plaza, many of them holding up phones to their ears as they listened to the proceedings taking place inside via live broadcast on YouTube.
A gathering of about 50 Brockton citizens calling for the defunding of the Police Department took place outside of City Hall on Wednesday during the second night of annual budget hearings. The movement to “defund the police,” which has been taking place in cities around the country, has brought a spotlight on budget hearings that typically do not draw nearly as much attention or participation.
