WASHINGTON – In opposing the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh, Faith in Action executive director Rev. Alvin Herring raised concerns about Kavanaugh’s likelihood to continue aiding the Trump Administration’s efforts to overturn the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

“Judge Kavanaugh’s opposition of the Affordable Care Act is harmful to middle class families and families living in poverty. He has criticized the Supreme Court on upholding the ACA’s individual mandate, yet the individual mandate was key in 20 million Americans gaining health insurance.

“It is clear that Kavanaugh is not an ally on expanded access to quality healthcare. We are concerned that he will use his position on the court to uphold the erosion of the ACA. More than 130 million people with pre-existing conditions could lose coverage if the ACA is overturned, and by adding another conservative to the court, we anticipate a long–term, adverse impact on American families.

“President Trump’s actions on the ACA have led to an increase in the number of uninsured Americans and raised state-by-state insurance premiums. For that reason alone, his nomination of Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court should give us pause. The disregard for children and families that has been at the forefront of this administration is only going to grow through the powers that he could potentially hold. Lawmakers must consider the welfare of the people who elected them, and reject this nomination.”
