WASHINGTON – Faith and civic leaders are relieved this afternoon at reports of Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s return to the United States, more than two months after he was wrongly deported to El Salvador. People of faith are joining with leaders from Faith in Action to offer prayers for his family and support for the difficult road ahead as they navigate his return home and upcoming court appearances.
Last month, Bishop Dwayne Royster stood alongside Jennifer Vasquez Sura, Kilmar’s wife, at a May Day rally hosted by Congregation Action Network, Faith in Action’s D.C.-area federation. At the rally, Royster offered prayers for their family and advocated for Kilmar’s safe return. In statements, leaders with Faith in Action share words of support and a road map for protecting immigrants, given the current political ecosystem and weaponization of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement:
Bishop Dwayne Royster, executive director at Faith in Action: “The wrongful deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia is not only a moral failing, but a direct affront on our constitution and the right to due process. We previously thought what happened to Kilmar to be unfathomable, now we know it to be the playbook of a reckless administration. Even though Kilmar has returned home, people of faith and moral conscience must continue to stand up against the inhumane treatment of migrants and call for the protection of all God’s children.”
Omar Angel Perez, immigrant justice director at Faith in Action: “We are standing today with Kilmar and his family, just as we have these past two months. Each moment has felt like an eternity, as people of faith have been grieving the miscarriage of justice and fighting for his safe return. We are organizing and mobilizing people of faith across the country to call for justice and the protection of our immigrant siblings.”
