Less than a year after Indianapolis police officers fatally shot two men in an eight-hour span, officials are close to finalizing a redesigned board that will oversee the policies that govern officers’ use of force, among many other rules.
The newly created General Orders Board will be able to adopt, interpret and amend IMPD policies.
Four of its seven members will be civilians.
Proponents say giving civilians a majority voice can help improve transparency and accountability while strengthening the relationship between police and community.
But one appointment has already caused division among some city officials, with opponents concerned the candidate may have unfair biases against police.
