Guilty Verdicts in Arbery Murder Trial a Step Forward For Accountability

WASHINGTON—Across the country, millions of Americans are breathing a sigh of relief that Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael, and William Bryan will be held accountable for murdering Ahmaud Arbery. The Rev. Alvin Herring, executive director of Faith in Action, the largest grassroots, faith-based organizing network in the United States, praised the verdict as a step forward for accountability in a justice system that has too often failed Black Americans:
“Today’s guilty verdicts in the trial of Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael, and William Bryan mean that, finally, there will be accountability for the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. The verdicts are a sign of progress, especially when you consider it was nearly an all-white jury, in an out of the way southern town that convicted these three murderers. True justice would mean our dear brother, our son, our heart would still be with us.
“Ahmaud Arbery was killed because he was Black, plain and simple. White supremacy and racism in America is real and continues to have deadly consequences, as it has for generations. Our work, at least today, seems not in vain, and means that we must persist in our efforts to defeat hate and demand justice for our siblings who fall victim to racist violence.”
