We pray for the George Floyd family and seek healing of their pain.

The demonstrations in the aftermath are about George Floyd, but it’s about far more. There will be another George Floyd, just as there was another Eric Garner, saying “I can’t breathe.” There will be other senseless deaths from police stops for alleged minor violations or alleged “something” unless there is real intention on the issue of policing by government leadership. When incidents happen, police say they were just doing their job, prosecutors and judges say we were just doing our jobs.

2 Peter 2:19 says, “They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity — for people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.” There is a fight for life against a system designed to keep certain people separated, poor, uneducated, under-educated, unemployed, underemployed, hungry and sick and without health care. It’s the system, systemic racism, and disregard for life, black life that has brought regular everyday people to the street in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is penned up rage, frustration, aggravation and agitation in many who are prepared but have no desire to be the next martyr. The “people” demonstrate in the street to garner the nation’s attention to institutionalized ills that must be addressed by seats of power.
