A grassroots organization has accused Mayor Domenic J. Sarno of “hiding” from public campaign events such as its forum for mayoral candidates scheduled Thursday night, saying his absence conflicts with his moniker as “the people’s mayor.”

The Pioneer Valley Project raised the criticism as Sarno had four scheduled public events Thursday, including a ribbon cutting at a new Dunkin’ Donuts shop at the Springfield Plaza and a groundbreaking for a new elementary school on Plainfield Street in the North End.
