WASHINGTON – Today, the Department of Justice announced that the 2020 Census will be printed without questioning a person’s citizenship. This announcement comes less than a week after the Supreme Court decision to block the question and return the case to the lower courts.

The following statement is from Richard Morales, policy and program director for LA RED, Faith in Action’s immigrant rights campaign:

“The printing of the 2020 Census without the citizenship question is a victory for everyone, especially immigrants. Following last week’s Supreme Court decision, we are relieved that the Trump administration’s latest attempt to erase immigrants and communities of color from existence through yet another overt racist policy was stopped in its tracks.

“However, our work does not end with this victory or with the printing of the census. We will work to ensure all persons are counted regardless of status because for too long our communities have been undercounted while politicians manipulated the census to preserve their own power. We will be counted in the census and reassert our own power. We are here and we will not leave.”
