BROCKTON – After a third hearing on the subject, City Council Ordinance Committee again decided on Wednesday to delay a vote on the Brockton United ordinance, a proposal that was deemed a “sanctuary city” law by Mayor Bill Carpenter, who was called “spineless” by one city councilor for failing to attend the meeting despite being invited.
But advocates for the proposal from the immigrant community and from the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts said they are optimistic about the five-person Ordinance Committee working toward a potential yes vote. Following an hour of guest speakers and deliberations, the Ordinance Committee decided to suspend the meeting to a future date, while seeking to consult with Carpenter, the city solicitor and police chief about a potential compromise ordinance, leading to a vote that could put the proposal before City Council as a whole.
