Powell said that she decided to get involved in politics after volunteering with Faith in Action, a group that advocates for racial equity, in 2017. “I’m running out of necessity,” she said. After realizing that no Democrats were challenging the Republican incumbents on the Public Service Commission, Powell completed all the necessary paperwork and prayed with her pastor about her decision over the phone as she drove to Montgomery, arriving forty minutes before the filing deadline. The commission “is doing a really good job of protecting profits of utility monopolies and not protecting the people,” she said.
