‘Kavanaugh’s record makes him a disastrous choice’ cautions executive director of largest grassroots faith-based organizing network

WASHINGTON –As the Senate prepares for Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination hearings to the Supreme Court this week, Faith in Action (formerly PICO National Network), the nation’s largest grassroots faith-based organizing network urged voters across the country to call their senators and ask them to oppose Kavanaugh’s nomination, citing particular concerns about his record related to the Affordable Care Act.

To date, 20 states have signed onto in Texas v. Azar the case that seeks to invalidate the Affordable Care Act. These states include Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin and West Virginia. Leaders with Faith in Action are most concerned as this case will make it to the Supreme Court just in time for Kavanaugh to vote on it if he is confirmed.

In a statement the Rev. Alvin Herring, executive director of Faith in Action, said:

“Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s record makes him a disastrous choice for health-conscious and freedom-seeking people in this country. His record is built on his belief that the Constitution should be interpreted as it was written in the 18th century, before women, African Americans or working people had codified rights — before these Americans had access to the public square.

“Nominee Kavanaugh has already publicly said he believes the Affordable Care Act, which provides coverage for some 20 million moms and dads, children, sisters and brothers, is invalid. Please know that this administration knew Kavanaugh’s extreme views and that is why he was nominated to the United States Supreme Court.

“If you are at all concerned about continuing to receive health coverage for pre-existing conditions for yourself and family members, you must call your senators now and tell them that in the richest nation in the world, taking a cancer patient to the hospital is a right, not a privilege. Urge them to publicly oppose Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination.

“At the end of the day, our elected leaders must publicly oppose Brett Kavanaugh. He won’t do right by our children and our families. He won’t do right by any of us. Kavanaugh’s anachronistic interpretation of the law could turn back the clock on hard-won victories for disenfranchised groups and reverse legal precedents in ways that fundamentally alter our democracy and the rights and freedoms of millions.”
