In Paul Feely’s May 27 column, the mission of the Granite State Organizing Project was misconstrued. Regarding the possibility of the Manchester Board of School Committee overruling its vice chair, Feely quoted BOSC member Ross Terrio as saying GSOP is “partisan (and) political.”
GSOP is a nonpartisan, community-based organization advancing diversity and leadership development as a catalyst for justice. Guided by faith and democratic values, we build power and leadership to win positive change. The majority of GSOP’s member organizations are churches. We encourage people to register and vote. We educate citizens by holding deep conversations about issues and by holding forums for candidates. We engage candidates regardless of party affiliation. We also assist people in gathering their voices to speak out about policies they regard as unfair and unjust. Some issues we have tackled are safe and affordable housing; access to health care; affordable, quality child care; wages that can support families; and respect for immigrant and minority rights.
