Omar Angel Perez, who represented DMV Sanctuary Congregation Network at the vigil, said Gbohoutou’s detention isn’t just.
“It’s unjust because nobody deserves this kind of treatment,” Perez said. “He was doing what he was told to do.”
Amuzie, who also works as communications director of the Interfaith Immigration Coalition, said cases like Gbohoutou’s are becoming more common.
“This is completely normal for the trends that we’re seeing in ICE enforcement,” she said. “They’re going for low-hanging fruit, for people who comply, people who show up to check-ins, people who follow the rules, because it’s easier.”
