Since the program began, more than 19,000 individuals have taken refuge in hotels in 40 states, in DC and Puerto Rico, and at least 5,000 continue to benefit from the system. However, the extension of the program expires on June 30, which could cause many of those affected to end up living in poverty.
Puerto Ricans arrived from the state of Massachusetts to ask legislators for FEMA to implement the “Disaster Housing Assistance” program that would provide long-term housing assistance to low-income families when natural disasters occur.
